Convulsive status epilepticus (#CSE) is a medical emergency with a high risk of #mortality and #morbidity. This new article by Kling et al. (Dec. 2022) reported the mortality, death reason, and factors affecting the outcome of CSE based on a 10-year follow-up study of 62 adult patients with CSE at the Helsinki University Hospital emergency department.

In-hospital mortality was 8.1%. The mortality at 1, 5, and 10 years were 25.8%, 51.6%, and 64.5%, respectively. The patients lost 20.9 years of life on average.  Brain disorders, epilepsy-related conditions, or intracranial tumours were the leading causes of death.
A convulsive #seizure lasting more than 5 min or consecutive seizures without recovery of consciousness is defined as convulsive status epilepticus, which can be #life-threatening.
