A surface electrode adjacent to vagal nerve stimulator lead can aid in characterizing vagal nerve stimulator mediated pediatric sleep-disordered breathing: a case series of 7 patients

A potential side effect associated with vagus nerve stimulation (#VNS) Therapy for drug resistant epilepsy (#DRE) is sleep-disordered breathing (#SDB).

This new case series by Chan et al. 2022 aimed to evaluate the ability of a surface electrode, placed over the VNS lead during #polysomnography, to determine whether an observed SDB event is related to VNS-induced nerve firing. The study included polysomnograms from 7 pediatric patients.

The surface electrode was able to record VNS firing during polysomnography and assisted the clinical experts in determining VNS-induced SDB in 57% of the patients. The authors recommend a surface electrode to be placed over the VNS lead as a standard procedure during polysomnography.
